Local Governments face challenges the cross the spectrum – from the mundane to spectacular, sometimes in the same day.
For many cities, the real payoff is measured in how they have improved the lives of their citizens. For example, one customer needed only increased bandwidth and the means to ensure quality of service to allow citizens to conduct all municipal business, from permit requests to paying parking fines, on-line.
The ability to interact more easily with city officials and access city services without spending a lifetime in line may not be exciting, but it certainly demonstrates a respect for and responsiveness to the citizenry that is all-too rare. Anyone who has spent the day at the Department of Motor Vehicles can appreciate that this consideration is taxpayer gold.
One municipal customer had the unique challenge of ratcheting their population up from less than 100,000 to more than 8,000,000. Given the nature of their population increase, it came as no surprise that a criminal element, a small proportion of the city’s guests, would likely make trouble.
The solution – a beefed-up city-wide Wi-Fi network that could accommodate the communications needs of residents and the visitors. More importantly, it also provides local law enforcement real-time streaming video from surveillance cameras as well as GPS vehicle tracking. The demands on the infrastructure the year before had taken down the network.
As one city staffer expressed, flying blind, deaf and dumb is absolutely not where you want to be when the town is overrun by literally millions of bikers, some of whom are known to not have the city’s best interests in mind.
