Layer 1 Cabling
The circulatory part of the network, cabling systems predate the modern network by a long shot. Since the days when the telegraph was king, the heavy lifting for any communications that go beyond the line of sight for semaphore flags and smoke signals is reliant on a physical medium to transport information. It is the most critical element of the network.
To put it bluntly, cabling is an art. Wireless advancements don’t change that. A bad install will cripple your business – it simply doesn’t matter what investment has been made for the network, nothing can overcome severed cable.
Cable has evolved. It continues to evolve. For example, DSL relies on copper twisted pair, once the domain of circuit-switched voice traffic. 10 years ago, you could expect about 256 K/bs. That has eked its way up to 40 Mbits/s and is on target to deliver 1 Gig/s in the near future. The bandwidth available from in-ground dark fiber has grown by an order of magnitude in the last few years. Cat 6 cable eliminates cross talk and noise compared to previous generations, but a bad installation robs it of its enhanced features as well as its most basic functionality.
